How the Mission Began...

Julie Holt

Founder, Uniform Families Foundation

My connection to the mission behind the Uniform Families Foundation did not begin as an idea or a professional opportunity. It began through my own life and the experiences my family has lived.

For more than two decades, I have been part of a uniform family.

My husband serves with the Los Angeles Fire Department, dedicating his career to protecting one of the largest cities in the country and responding to emergencies that most people will never see firsthand. Being married to someone in the fire service means living with a reality that many families understand but few outside the community truly see.

The long shifts.

The missed holidays.

The late night calls.

The uncertainty that comes every time the station tones drop.

It also means living with a deep sense of pride in the work that these men and women do to protect others.

Over the years, I have come to understand that when someone chooses a life of service, their entire family becomes part of that journey. The strength of the person wearing the uniform is supported by the strength of the family behind them.

Some of the moments that shaped my life the most came during extremely difficult seasons for our family.

Shortly after we lost my father in law, my husband and I learned that we were expecting twins. What should have been one of the happiest moments of our lives quickly became one of the most heartbreaking.

During delivery, we tragically lost one of our babies.

Our surviving twin entered the world as a micro preemie, fighting for life during those earliest days and requiring extraordinary care and strength.

Less than six months later, I became pregnant again. Because of the complications from the previous pregnancy, I was placed on strict bed rest.

During that time, while my husband continued serving the city as a firefighter, our family was navigating grief, medical uncertainty, and the emotional weight that comes with trying to stay strong for one another.

It was during that season of life that something became very clear to me.

Families connected to public service often face some of life’s most difficult moments quietly and privately.

The person in uniform continues to serve the community, but the family at home is often holding everything together without a support system that truly understands what they are going through.

At that time, there was no organization specifically focused on supporting the families of those who serve in these professions.

There was no single place where spouses, children, and loved ones of firefighters, police officers, paramedics, military service members, and medical professionals could turn to for support and community.

That realization stayed with me.

Over time, it grew into a vision.

I began to believe that supporting the people who serve our communities also means supporting the families who stand behind them.

That belief eventually became the foundation for the Uniform Families Foundation.

I created the Uniform Families Foundation to bring visibility, resources, and community to the families of public service professionals.

The foundation focuses on supporting families connected to:

Fire service

Law enforcement

Emergency medical services

Military service

Healthcare and medical professions

These professions demand extraordinary courage and commitment. The families who support these professionals often carry sacrifices that the public rarely sees.

Through the Uniform Families Foundation, my goal is to ensure that those families are never overlooked.

Our work focuses on several important areas.

Supporting families during times of crisis.

Connecting spouses and children with trusted community resources.

Providing emotional and financial support programs.

Honoring the sacrifices made at home while service happens in the field.

I believe that service never belongs to one person alone.

Behind every firefighter, police officer, paramedic, soldier, and physician is a family that supports them every step of the way.

Service does not happen in isolation.

It happens because someone at home is holding everything together.

Today, as founder of the Uniform Families Foundation, my vision is to build a national network of support for families connected to public service professions.

My hope is that families across the country will be able to find connection, resources, and encouragement through the work we are building.

Because the truth is simple.

Behind every uniform is a family.

And those families deserve to be seen, supported, and never forgotten.

A Personal Note from the Founder

If you are part of a uniform family, I want you to know that you are not alone.

Whether you are a spouse, a partner, a parent, or a child of someone who serves, I understand that the life you live is often filled with both pride and quiet sacrifice.

You celebrate the courage of the person you love, but you also carry the worry, the waiting, and the responsibility that comes with supporting someone in a demanding profession.

The Uniform Families Foundation was created for families like yours.

My hope is that this organization becomes a place where uniform families can find understanding, connection, and support when they need it most.

Because the truth is that service is never carried by one person alone.

It is carried by the entire family standing behind them.

And those families deserve to be seen, valued, and supported every step of the way.
